Biogas Production Trends and Outlook
Prospects for the Development of the Biogas Industry in Ukraine
Modern economic development in Ukraine requires the transition to resource-efficient, environmentally friendly, and low-waste technologies. This transition is complex and capital-intensive. It also requires replacing many traditional production methods with more sustainable solutions. In recent years, renewable energy has become one of the key pillars of energy security worldwide. This trend is driven by the depletion of fossil fuel reserves, rising energy prices, and concerns about the reliability of energy supplies.
Environmental impacts have also become increasingly significant. Their consequences are now more visible and of growing concern to society. In many countries, renewable energy has significantly expanded existing energy capacity. It has also strengthened energy security and supported socio-economic development.
Renewable energy plays an increasingly important role in addressing global climate change. For Ukraine, its importance is even greater due to the country’s energy challenges. Ukraine is not self-sufficient in energy resources and remains heavily dependent on imported energy. This dependence creates economic vulnerability and contributes to geopolitical risks. The production of biogas from agricultural organic waste is considered one of the most promising directions for renewable energy development. Ukraine has substantial potential for biogas production thanks to its well-developed agricultural sector. Agricultural residues provide an abundant and sustainable feedstock for biogas generation. Biogas produced from biomass can become a reliable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
Biogas Utilisation Options
Biogas can be utilised in several ways. It can be combusted in heating systems or upgraded to biomethane for use as a vehicle fuel. Biogas can also be used in combined heat and power (CHP) units to generate electricity and heat. The electricity can be consumed on-site or supplied to the power grid. The production of biomethane requires a biogas upgrading plant, where raw biogas is purified to meet the required gas quality standards.
Ukraine has significant biomass resources and favourable conditions for renewable energy development. These advantages make biogas and biomethane promising solutions for improving energy security and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
An analysis of biogas production trends in selected EU countries and Ukraine highlights significant differences in the development of the biogas sector. Germany has established a mature and stable biogas industry, supported by substantial installed capacity and high utilisation rates (Table 2). In Poland, the sector is developing at a slower pace. However, it continues to demonstrate stable growth with a steady increase in biogas production and installed capacity each year.
Challenges for the Development of Biogas Technologies
Despite the significant biomass potential of Ukraine’s agricultural sector, biogas production has not yet reached its full potential. The main barriers to the development of biogas projects include:
- Insufficient infrastructure for the transportation of biomass feedstock.
- High interest rates on financing.
- High initial capital investment requirements.
- Limited access to working capital and investment funding.
- High inflation rates.
- Inefficient utilisation of biomass residues.
- Insufficient incentives for the adoption of biomass energy technologies.
- Limited awareness among businesses of the benefits and opportunities of biogas production and utilisation.
- Complex procedures for land allocation and permitting for renewable energy projects.
