The Role of Trace Elements in the Methanogenesis Process<\/h4>\n

Trace elements are essential for methanogenic processes. They are key components of the coenzymes involved in numerous biochemical reactions leading to methane formation. When the supply of trace elements is limited, the microbial population’s ability to synthesise these enzymes is also reduced, which in turn impairs the metabolic activity and overall performance of the digester.<\/p>\n

Trace elements must not only be present but also be available in a bioavailable form. A deficiency or low bioavailability of trace elements can reduce the maximum organic loading rate and\/or decrease process efficiency. The accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in the digester may indicate a nutrient deficiency. However, if trace elements are present in sufficient quantities and remain bioavailable, the possibility of process inhibition due to toxicity should also be considered.<\/p>\n

Although iron had long been recognised as a stimulant for anaerobic digestion, its role was not fully understood until the 1980s. Researchers discovered that trace elements were insufficient to sustain microbial activity in digesters fed with defined culture media. Nickel was the first trace element identified as essential, followed by cobalt. The practical benefits of supplementing these elements soon became evident.<\/p>\n

In a survey of municipal wastewater treatment plants, 8 out of 30 anaerobic digesters showed improved acetate utilisation. These digesters also demonstrated increased methane production after the addition of iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and cobalt (Co). Since then, numerous studies have confirmed that trace element supplementation improves anaerobic digestion performance. These benefits have been demonstrated across a wide range of feedstocks and digester configurations.<\/p>\n

Further research has identified additional trace elements that play essential roles in both methanogenic metabolism and acetogenic processes. A summary of these trace elements and their functions in different metabolic pathways is presented in the table below.<\/p>\n

It is difficult to provide universal guidelines for trace element dosing, as their required concentrations vary depending on process conditions. In addition, trace elements readily form insoluble precipitates with sulfides, carbonates, and phosphates, reducing their availability to microorganisms.<\/p>\n

Trace elements may remain soluble through chelation, whereby they bind to organic molecules. However, if the resulting complexes are too stable, the trace elements can become biologically unavailable despite remaining in solution.<\/p>\n

Increasing the dosage to overcome these limitations is generally not recommended, as many trace elements exhibit a narrow optimal concentration range. While they stimulate microbial activity at low concentrations, excessive amounts may become inhibitory or even toxic to the anaerobic microbial community.<\/p>\n

Benefits of Trace Element Supplementation in Biogas Plants<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

Most agricultural anaerobic digesters use energy crops together with animal manure; however, mono-digestion of crops increases the risk of trace element deficiencies. Only a few feedstocks contain all the essential elements required for optimal methanogenic activity.<\/p>\n

Supplementation with iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se),<\/strong> and molybdenum (Mo)<\/strong> improves process stability, enhances microbial activity, and increases biogas and methane yields. Trace element deficiencies are most common when digesting plant-based feedstocks without ruminant manure.<\/p>\n

Trace elements are used to stabilise biological processes, improve performance under high organic loading, and maintain stable operation during fluctuating feedstock supply. They are typically dosed in small quantities, either manually or through automatic dosing systems.<\/p>\n

Their application helps reduce volatile fatty acids (VFAs)<\/strong>, increase methane content, lower substrate viscosity, and improve overall digester efficiency. Trace element supplements are applied only when needed, for example, to address elevated ammonia levels or excessive foaming.<\/p>\n
